Oliver Thorne, a specialist medical accident inquest lawyer, represented the family of 20-year-old Maddy Lawrence, who was injured while playing rugby for her university team. Maddy was taken to hospital after suffering her injury, but tragically passed away several weeks later as a result of contracting a bacterial infection while being cared for.

The rugby injury, a dislocated hip, had not been life threatening, and when Maddy was admitted to hospital her family had every expectation that she would be home by the weekend. However, that was not to be. She picked up the bacterial infection which the acute team in ICU could not get under control and it ultimately caused her death.

Maddy’s passing drew tributes from far and wide, including one from former England rugby player Austin Healey who said in a Tweet that Maddy’s death was “so sad”.

A medical accident inquest was held to consider the treatment Maddy received while she was in hospital. The coroner felt it was important to look at the causative issues and the protocols that the hospital followed, such as sepsis screening.

These questions involved complex medical issues, requiring input from an expert microbiologist.
