By failing to diagnose the condition correctly the patient may suffer a stoke that could have been avoided altogether, or the effects of the stroke may be worse than they would have been if a more timely medical intervention had been made.
This is particularly relevant where a major stroke has been preceded by a ‘transient ischaemic attack’ or TIA. These involve a temporary interruption of the blood supply to the brain, giving rise to short-lived stroke symptoms. TIAs act as a warning. If they are diagnosed and immediately treated (aspirin is commonly used) then a full stroke may be avoided.
Strokes can also be brought about by the incorrect prescription of medication.
