The background to the case

Our client, Mr L, was prescribed Prednisolone (steroid medication) by his GP. After taking the medication for over a year, he started to experience severe back pain and went to his local A&E department. Tests revealed that Mr L had a suffered a spinal fracture which had developed as a consequence of his long-term steroid use.

Not only did Mr L suffer physically, but his mental health was also affected due to the ongoing pain and physical incapacity.

The compensation claim

Mr L consulted with our medical negligence team, and we agreed to take on his compensation claim. Caroline arranged for a medical expert to review the care provided by Mr L’s GP, particularly in relation to his repeat prescriptions of prednisolone. The expert concluded that Mr L had not been warned about the risk of spinal fractures and that there were repeated failures to monitor him after he was prescribed steroid medication. As a result of these medical failings, opportunities to prescribe bone-protective treatment were lost.

Caroline engaged a rheumatology expert to assess the link between steroid use and Mr L’s spinal fractures. She also obtained a psychiatric report on Mr L’s mental health.

All the medical experts supported the claim, and settlement negotiation took place. Caroline was able to successfully resolve the claim out of court, with compensation in excess of £350,000 being awarded to Mr L.
