We have recently concluded an amputation claim on behalf of a man who required partial finger amputation following negligent medical treatment.

While at work, our client accidentally cut the middle finger on his left hand. The following day, he went to the emergency department of his local hospital. He was reviewed but although he had obvious signs of infection (which were noted by the medical professional who saw him) he was discharged home with ibuprofen.

Following discharge, he experienced an increasing pulsing pain in his injured finger and developed a fever. He went to his local treatment centre but was advised to collect a prescription from the pharmacy at a nearby supermarket, which was shut when he got there.

Our client returned to the emergency department again, as his pain continued and puss was oozing from the injured finger. He was given antibiotics and remained in hospital under review.

While he was in hospital his conditioned worsened. There was increased swelling around the injured finger, redness on the skin which spread to the middle of his arm, loss of sensation and numbness, together with excruciating pain.

He was diagnosed as suffering from significant erythema which is a skin reaction that can be triggered by sepsis.  Sepsis is a life-threatening condition and due to the rapid deterioration of his condition, he was blue-lighted to another hospital.

He underwent 3 operations and on the final procedure, part of his finger was amputated.

The test results concluded that our client was suffering from a Group A Streptococcus infection.

Caroline Webber-Brown, who is a partner specialising in medical accident claims, took this case on under our popular no win – no fee funding scheme.

Although the NHS denied fault Caroline was able to reach an out of court settlement, bringing our client’s amputation claim to a successful conclusion.
